With wildfires knocking on the door of Yellowknife, the City of Whitehorse sends support to help the fight
WHITEHORSE – The Wilderness City is sending firefighters from the local department to Yellowknife to help battle nearby wildfires.
Personnel from 7 city departments are being sent to Yellowknife to protect the Northwest Territories capital from the encroaching fires and help in evacuation efforts.
Wildfires are as close as 13 kilometres to the Northwest Territories capital of Yellowknife.
This follows a formal offer of support earlier today to the city of Yellowknife for various personnel including:
– Engineering Personnel
– Water/Waste Operations Bylaw Parks and Recreation Maintenance
– Road Maintenance
– Public Communications
– EOC Coordination/leadership and/or volunteer coordination
The City of Whitehorse will continue to coordinate with the city of Yellowknife through the Government of Yukon’s Emergency Measures Office to ensure City of Whitehorse staff are ready should they be called upon.
The City is also prepared to again offer the use of the Canada Games Centre to Yukon’s Emergency Measures Office should they need it to receive evacuees.
