The Yukon Government has approved 35 million dollars in funds for the First Nation Education Board under a financial agreement
YUKON – In a funding agreement the Yukon Government approves of $35 million in support of the First Nation School Board.
The $35 million in funding to the First Nation School Board over the next 15 months will support operations, maintenance, and the development of language and cultural educational programs.
This significant funding agreement will assist in meeting commitments outlined in the Framework Agreement with the Chiefs Committee on Education, the Joint Education Action Plan, and recommendations from the 2019 Auditor General of Canada Report to improve education outcomes for Indigenous and rural students, as well as implement systemic changes that incorporate Yukon First Nations culture and languages into the Yukon’s education system.
The deal includes financing not just for First Nation School Board school operations and maintenance, but also for the development of school board organizational capability and Yukon First Nations language and culture curricula and educational activities.
The First Nation School Board is now in charge of eight schools for the 2022-2023 academic year. With the start of the 2023-2024 school year, three more schools will be under the supervision of the First Nation School Board, bringing the total to eleven.
