Macklen originally hails from New Westminster, BC, and found that early childhood interests in social studies and current events led him to first explore the field of journalism. His four years as a teenager in Perth, Australia, brought a global perspective, setting the stage for a career shaped by diverse cultures.
After graduating high school in Vancouver, Mack spent his first year at Mount Royal University in Calgary and dipped his toes into studying Journalism. After his first year he transferred to Carleton University in Ottawa but the COVID-19 pandemic left him adapting to remote work.
His interest in radio journalism flourished during his time as a reporter and producer at CKCU, Carleton University’s radio station during his last semester. Now, freshly armed with a BA in Journalism and a minor in Political Science, Macklen has set his sights on Whitehorse, seeking hands-on experience and a fresh and vibrant community.
Mack’s bylines have been featured in the Calgary Journal, The Charlatan and the Capital Current covering a range of topics including social justice, local politics and the arts. In 2021 he showcased his editorial prowess as Arts and Culture editor at the Charlatan.
Beyond the newsroom, Macklen unwinds with a book and a cup of coffee or a quick guitar session; however his love of exploration lives beyond words with the Yukon’s stunning landscapes serving as his backdrop for adventure.
