Whitehorse, YT – Yukon MP Brendan Hanley has endorsed Mark Carney in the race for Liberal Party leader, praising the former Bank of Canada and Bank of England governor as the leader Canada needs to address future economic challenges.
Carney launched his leadership bid in Edmonton, pledging to tackle economic uncertainty and challenge Conservative policies. He helped guide Canada through the 2008 Financial Crisis and steer the United Kingdom through Brexit as governor of the Bank of Canada and Bank of England.
In a statement posted on Facebook, Hanley described Carney as a decisive leader capable of navigating challenging circumstances, emphasizing his expertise in economic and global affairs.
“We need an expert in the economy at the helm of our country in order to be ready for anything that 2025 and beyond may bring,” reads Hanley’s statement.
This comes as incoming President Donald Trump has threatened to impose 25 percent tariffs on all Canadian goods.
Hanley also highlighted Carney’s Northern roots, noting that he was born in Fort Smith, Northwest Territories, and raised in Alberta, adding that Carney will have “greater familiarity with the North than any other Prime Minister this country has had.”
Former Finance Minister Chrystia Freeland and Liberal House Leader Karina Gould are expected to announce their own leadership bids in the coming days.
The Liberal leadership race concludes on March 9th, with candidates required to declare their bids by January 23rd.
