Funding from the Canadian and Yukon Governments was announced yesterday to support the construction of a new Burwash Landing School
BURWASH LANDING – Preliminary funding was announced to help construct a new school in Burwash Landing.
In a joint announcement, members of the Yukon Government and Kluane First Nation got together to declare $22.5 million in preliminary funding to support a new school. The final value of the school won’t be released until the procurement phase finishes.
The brand new public school will replace the 60 year old Kluane Lake School in Destruction Bay. The current school is populated with students that live in or around Burwash Landing and get bused into and from school. The government hopes the new school will better suit children and families in the community in the future.
Federal officials say The Government of Canada is strengthening the country’s economy, enhancing the resiliency of our communities, and improving Canadians’ lives by investing in rural, remote, and northern infrastructure.
The federal government will invest up to $10,875,000, and the Yukon government will contribute at least $11.7 million to match Canada’s contribution to this project.
