WHITEHORSE, YT – The Yukon Government has announced the passing of Deputy Minister of Environment, Michael Prochazka.
Premier Ranj Pillai has issued a statement mourning his passing, where he said his thoughts and prayers are with Prochazka’s family, as well as with Minister Nils Clarke, who the Premier says had been injured in the same accident that had killed the Deputy Minister.
Premier Pillai commended Michael Prochazka’s many years of public service with the Yukon Government, highlighting his past role as Deputy Minister of Economic Development, as well as his extensive experience with Parks Canada, where he had worked for over a decade to make Yukon’s nations parks and historic sites more accessible to the public. The Premier also drew special attention to Prochazka’s advocacy for the development of many Indigenous-led tourism opportunities alongside Yukon’s First Nations.
“Michael was not just passionate about conservation, nature, and public service – he was a true leader who lifted up those around him. He was not just the top public servant at the Department of Environment, he was funny and kind. He celebrated the work and dedication of Department of Environment staff. He empowered those working for him, and most importantly, was always available to lend a kind word and a helping hand to anyone who needed it.” – Yukon Premier Ranj Pillai
