Whitehorse, YT – Ted Laking, currently a member of the Whitehorse City Council, has announced that he is seeking the Conservative Party of Canada’s (CPC) nomination to become the party’s candidate and the territory’s next Member of Parliament for the Yukon.
The release announcing the decision says that as a lifelong Yukoner and father of two children, he is invested in the territory’s future and its success.
“I want to help ensure that my kids, and all Yukon children, have access to the same opportunities I had growing up in the territory,” says Laking. “Life is significantly more expensive than it was for my parents, and I cannot sit on the sidelines without trying to do everything possible to build a community that gives opportunities to our future generations.”
Previously serving as President of the Association of Yukon Communities, Laking outlined several priorities including the rising cost of living, building more homes, reducing crime and advocating for the Yukon at the national level.
“Ottawa treats our community as an afterthought and has not been focused on our priorities,” Laking says in the release. “I will be a strong and confident voice to ensure that the Yukon’s concerns and needs are addressed.”
The release also mentions that the lack of transparency from the federal government both concerns and motivates Laking who says more transparency is needed and aims to restore faith in our government institutions to ensure they best serve Yukoners.
The CPC has not yet set a date for a nomination meeting.
The next federal election is set for October 20th, 2025, but could be called sooner.
