Whitehorse, YT – Anyone driving through one of the territory’s nine key points of entry later this summer will at some point pass by artwork displaying thinhorn sheep, bears, and mountain views giving travelers a sneak peek of what the Yukon has to offer.
This new artwork is prominently displayed on the new welcome to Yukon signage which the Yukon Government will install later this summer.
There were 28 artists that submitted proposals but nine were selected to represent each region through their work. Selected artists were paid $6,000 for their work.
The signs will be installed in July and August and each installation will be marked by small public celebrations at the nearest visitor information centre. Stickers and postcards featuring the artwork will also be available at these centres.
As the new signs go up, the old signs will be removed and repurposed. One of the signs will live in the Sign Post Forest in Watson Lake and another will go to the Yukon Transportation Museum in Whitehorse.
The Yukon Government also plans to update the artwork on each sign every five years.
The selected artists are Tara Easley, Kimberly Edgar, Maegan Garrett, Leslie Leong, Ferryn Nowatzki, Chantal Rousseau, Dustin Sheldon, Justien Senoa, and Terrence Shorty.
