Whitehorse, YT – Last Friday, an evacuation alert was issued for parts of Old Crow as the flood risk along the Porcupine River grows during the seasonal breakup.
The Yukon Emergency Measures Organization and the Vuntut Gwitchin First Nation issued the alert for zones 1, 2 and 3 although other areas may be affected in the future.
Flood monitors will go door to door and notify people in the areas under the alert and they’re asked to be ready for a possible evacuation at a moment’s notice. Evacuations will begin quickly if water rises quickly and overtops Dump Road.
If there is an evacuation, people need to register at the reception centre at Chief Zzeh Gittlit School even if they’re not staying there. Local officials will support residents and visitors with evacuation before flooding and during if needed.
When preparing for evacuation the Yukon Government says you should pack an emergency kit, have an evacuation plan which you share with the administration office and stay clear of the Porcupine and Crow rivers when ice is breaking up or the water is running fast and high.
People are also encouraged to tell family and friends where they are and their contact information including satellite phones.
According to a press release from the Vuntut Gwitchin Government, water levels were down on Monday following peak levels recorded on Sunday. Levels are expected to rise again this week as temperatures rise.
Information will be available at the community centre, the Chief Zzeh Gittlit School, on the Vuntut Gwitchin Government Facebook page, the Yukon Protective Services Facebook page, 105.5 FM and at www.Yukon.ca/emergencies.
Update: On Tuesday afternoon, Evacuation Alerts for zones 2 and 3 were rescinded but remain in place in zone 1.
