Whitehorse, YT – The first of the King Charles III Coronation Medals were awarded to six Yukonners for their remarkable work for the betterment of Canada and their communities marking the first time since 1959 that a coronation medal was awarded in the territory.
The medal was created to celebrate the coronation of His Majesty King Charles III on May 6th, 2023. Aside from showcasing extraordinary work for the community, eligible nominees must have been alive on the date the medal was created.
This medal recognizes 30,000 individuals across the country with the Commissioner of Yukon Adeline Webber having 21 to distribute to deserving Yukonners.
“The King Charles III Coronation Medal is a visible and tangible way to recognize outstanding individuals of all ages and from all walks of life who have made a difference in their community,” remarked Webber.
On May 6th, 2024, Commissioner Webber handed out the first of the medals to six Yukonners for their positive work in the community.
The recipients are Captain Andy Rector, Joe Migwans, Larry Bagnell, Linda Johnson, Lillian Nakamura Maguire and Minnie Clark.
The last time a coronation medal was presented in the Yukon was in 1959 for the coronation of Queen Elizabeth II which occurred on February 6th, 1952.
