Whitehorse, YT – A motion calling for Victoria Gold’s receiver to testify in the Legislative Assembly about remediation work at the Eagle Gold Mine is gaining unanimous support.
The motion specifies that senior vice presidents from Pricewaterhouse Coopers (PwC) would testify on April 29th.
Yukon Party MLA Scott Kent, who brought the motion forward, says this will give elected officials the chance to ask questions about the receiver’s work at the site and the cost of cleanup.
“There’s a whole host of questions that we have, and again, I think one of them is with respect to to the viability of selling the project and getting it back into the private sector and removing the liability from Yukon taxpayers,” said Kent.
Increasing costs of remediation are also expected to be discussed following a decision from the Ontario Superior Court of Justice that approved PwC’s request to raise their borrowing limit from $105 million to $220 million.
Energy, Mines and Resources Minister John Streicker noted that the receiver is accountable to the court and has regularly communicated with the Yukon Government but welcomes the opportunity to hear public testimony from PwC.
“I think it’s good for Yukoners to hear from the opposition what their questions are and I think it’s good to hear from us,” said Streicker.
Yukon NDP leader Kate White says she plans to support the motion.
Testimony would be provided on April 29th before the Committee of the Whole.
