WHITEHORSE, YT – Starting April 1st, the Whitehorse Waste Management Facility will switch to charging for waste drop-offs by weight, including drop-offs for residential waste.
All vehicles will be weighed upon entry and exit of the facility, with the charges determined by the cost per pound for each category of waste, with a minimum fee of $6.00 for loads less than 100 pounds. Mixed loads will be charged highest applicable fee for their load.
The new fees are as follows:
- Household waste – $132.50 per tonne (approximately $0.06 per pound)
- Residential recyclable materials – $132.50 per tonne (effective until the launch of the territorial EPR program)
- Organics, brush and clean wood – $72.50 per tonne (approx. $0.03 per pound)
- Construction waste, metals and bulky items – $143.00 per tonne (approx. $0.07 per pound)
The City says, minimum fees do not apply for recyclables or organics if brought separately, and household hazardous waste can still be dropped off for free if brought during the designated times on Saturdays.
New surcharges will also be coming into effect for things like mattresses, and freon containing appliances:
- Mattresses – $20 surcharge in addition to weighed fee (construction waste, metals and bulky items)
- Fridges, freezers and other Freon appliances – $50.00 surcharge in addition to weighed fee (construction waste, metals and bulky items)
