Whitehorse, YT – Canada needs to present a strong proposal to the U.S. if we want to avoid possible 25 percent tariffs according to Yukon Premier Ranj Pillai who arrived back in the territory on Friday following meetings with U.S. officials.
After meeting with several officials close to President Donald Trump including Deputy Chief of Staff James Blair, Pillai told CKRW a key takeaway is that the U.S. is resetting relations with Canada.
“We really need to be ensuring that we put very solid proposals as a country on the table when it comes to trade, but I think it’s incredibly important that we look to diversify all of our markets at the same time,” said Pillai.
Strong proposals including things that the U.S. does not have access to is the only way Pillai believes Canada can wade off the 25 percent tariff threat.
“I think we have to be very smart about how we go into that discussion,” said Pillai. “I don’t think they’re backing away but I did see in the discussion room for an opportunity for deals to be made.”
He emphasized that agreements on energy and critical minerals could be key to strengthening Canada-U.S. ties while securing economic stability. Yukon, with vast mineral resources, could play a major role in meeting demands for critical minerals.
Beyond trade, Pillai argues Canada needs a stronger Arctic strategy as global interest in the region grows.
