WHITEHORSE, YT – The Northern Rockies RCMP in British Columbia have confirmed that missing hiker Sam Benastick has been found alive after spending 50 days lost in the wilderness surrounding Redfern Lake.
Benastick had been reported missing on October 19th, but had not been heard from since October 8th, shortly after he had set out for a camping trip in the area.
RCMP say, two men heading to Redfern Lake trail for work had spotted Sam Benastick on the trail around 1130am, Tuesday, November 26th, then transported him to a local Hospital for treatment
According to the RCMP, Sam had told police that in the time he was missing, he had spent a few nights in his car before moving camp to a new location by a mountain side creek where he remained for between 10 to 15 days. He had eventually moved back down to a dry creek bed in a valley before making the trek to the area where he was able to flag down to the two men that rescued him.
An extensive search for Sam Benastick had taken place in the month of October involving Search and Rescue units from multiple jurisdictions, the Canadian Rangers, and many local volunteers.
The search for Sam had officially been called off on October 30th.
