WHITEHORSE, YT – The Yukon RCMP say Yukoners have reported close to $2.5 million dollars in losses due to cryptocurrency frauds since 2022.
According to the RCMP, scammers have been making extensive use of two types of frauds when targeting Yukoners, Investments Scams and Fake Recovery Companies.
Investment scams usually take the form of an digital advertisement with someone posing as an investment manager claiming you could earn big returns with minimal risk by investing in crypto though them. The RCMP say scammers have been providing fake statements indicative of growth on your investment, but when you pay the requested fees to withdraw your earnings, the scammer breaks contact, leaving you out all the money you’ve spent.
When it comes to Fake Recovery Companies, theses scams are targeted at those who feel they’ve have previously been the victim of fraud, and sometimes, fraudsters will use this technique to target the same victim twice, contacting them with a fake recovery plan after they had just swindling them out of their funds with a separate scam. In these cases, the fake companies often follow up with spoofed documents indicating progress, but the funds are never returned. The RCMP warns any documents provided by these groups are not legitimate, and can not be used by the RCMP to track lost funds.
If you feel you’ve been the victim of fraud, document all correspondence, and contact your local RCMP detachment immediately.
