WHITEHORSE, YT – As the RCMP begins to roll out body-worn cameras nationwide, officers from the Yukon RCMP’s Whitehorse Detachment will be equipped with them by month’s end.
Uniformed officers from the Whitehorse RCMP, the Kwanlin Dün Policing Unit, and Car 867 will be the first in the territory equipped with the new gear. The District Relief Unit, which serves community detachments as needed, will also be outfitted with the body cameras. Other detachments of the Yukon RCMP will receive the cameras in phases over the next 18 months.
The cameras will be chest-mounted, and will capture video and audio when a uniformed officer responds to a call. Three red lights will light up below the camera’s lens when they’re recording.
The RCMP confirmed the body cameras will not be used for surveillance or in situations where there’s a high expectation of privacy.
