Whitehorse, YT – Yukon Wildland Fire Management plans to continue prescribed burning in the Mary Lake area of the Whitehorse South Fuel Break today due to favourable weather conditions.
Earlier this summer, wildfire crews successfully burned one field in the area, building on previous prescribed burns conducted in the late summer of 2022 and 2023.
These burns will clear leftover slash from spruce and pine trees, making way for the growth of fire-resistant aspen trees. Aspen seedlings require more sunlight to thrive which is why prescribed burns are needed to clear dense vegetation.
As with previous burns, smoke will be visible and may be detectable from a distance.
Wildland Fire Management teams aim to minimize smoke impacts on nearby residents by selecting days when smoke is likely to disperse quickly however residents may notice smoke during these operations.
