Whitehorse, YT – Some Canadian and American fighters took to the skies to intercept four military bombers from Russia and China flying near Alaska on Wednesday.
NORAD had spotted the four military aircraft on July 24th and dispatched jet fighters in response.
The two Russian aircraft were identified as TU-95 bombers and the two Chinese aircraft were PRC H-6 jet-engine bombers.
These planes stayed in international airspace and did not enter U.S. or Canadian territory.
NORAD says this activity isn’t a threat but they will “continue to monitor competitor activity near North America and meet presence with presence.”
Yukon Premier Ranj Pillai says they are working hard with the Canadian Government to protect Yukoners.
Recently, the territorial government established a Yukon Arctic Security Advisory Council to advance knowledge of international threats to the Yukon.
The Premier adds that the Yukon Government is working closely with the Department of National Defense to increase the presence of the Canadian Armed Forces (CAF) and dual-use CAF infrastructure in the territory.
