Whitehorse, YT – A washout on the Alaska Highway north of Fort Nelson, B.C., and a rock slide on the Southe Klondike Highway between Fraser, B.C., and Carcross left both roads closed with no immediate plans for reopening.
Late yesterday, a portion of the Alaska Highway washed out exposing the orange cable that is the Yukon’s fibre internet line.
Drive BC says flooding between 115 Creek Campground and Callison Road, 167 kilometers north of Fort Nelson, resulted in a closure at kilometer marker 624 for traffic in both directions.
Northwestel warned of the possibility of a service outage due to the washout and dispatched technicians to the scene. They have not reported any service impacts.
The Yukon Government stated they are ready to respond to an outage if necessary.
Further west a rock slide poured over the South Klondike Highway between Fraser, B.C., and Carcross resulting in a closure.
Crews with Yukon Protective Services say the slide is roughly 110 to 150 meters wide, 20 meters high and fully covers both lanes. Work to clear the road has been slow due to unfavourable weather and the risks of a second slide.
An estimated time for the reopening of both roads is not yet available.
