Whitehorse, YT – Whitehorse councillor Mellisa Murray announced her intentions to run for the position of mayor in the upcoming municipal election this fall.
The July 9th release announcing the decision mentions that Murray is a lifelong resident of Whitehorse and that she is deeply rooted in the community and understands the wants and needs of residents.
Murray says her experience working with Yukon First Nations, YFN development corporations, the broader business community, and local NGOs, along with her three years on the city council, has “strengthened her understanding of municipal politics and governance and will support her in her role as Mayor to lead and collaborate with the next Council.”
Inclusivity and diversity are essential to Murray, a second-generation Chinese Canadian and mother of two children. She aims to inspire underrepresented community members and show them their voices can make a difference.
“As a lifelong resident of Whitehorse, I am passionate about our city and its future,” Murray stated. “I believe in the power of community and collaboration. Together, we can build a thriving, inclusive, and sustainable community.”
Some of councillor Murray’s priorities include combatting climate change, focusing on equity, diversity and inclusivity, supporting affordable housing and infrastructure development, building relationships with all levels of government and the health and safety of all residents.
Mellisa’s candidacy for Mayor is driven by her vision for a united Whitehorse that prioritizes the well-being of its residents,” the release reads. “She is committed to working tirelessly to create a city where everyone feels heard, valued, and empowered.”
Whitehorse councillor Kirk Cameron is the only other councillor who announced their intention to run.
