Whitehorse, YT – On Tuesday, June 25th, Whitehorse RCMP arrested the driver of the vehicle that struck and killed a cyclist on the Alaska Highway on June 13th.
The cyclist was killed in a hit-and-run near Rabbits Foot Canyon on Thursday, June 13th.
Adam Lougheed, a 41-year-old male, with no fixed address, has been arrested and charged with driving while prohibited, dangerous driving causing death and failing to remain at the scene of a collision that caused death.
Police say that Lougheed appeared in court on June 25th and was held in custody.
At the time of the hit and run Lougheed was bound by a court-ordered Canada-wide prohibition on driving. He currently has several pending charges in the Yukon, Alberta and British Columbia. At the time of his arrest on Tuesday for the death of the cyclist, he was in custody pending a bail hearing for incidents in Whitehorse on June 18th and June 21st.
On June 18th, RCMP responded to a report of a man who had been stabbed and had his vehicle stolen. The victim sustained non-life threatening injuries and police say that he knew the suspect.
On June 21st, a police officer had seen the stolen vehicle in Whitehorse and police resources including the Emergency Response Team and the Crime Reduction Unit responded.
Adam Lougheed was arrested without incident and he was charged with a sling of charges including robbery, possession of a weapon for dangerous purposes and uttering threats to cause death.
RCMP have extended their condolences to the family and friends of the cyclist killed and thanked the public for their help throughout their investigation.
