Whitehorse, YT – Last week over 20 delegates pushed the city to call for an immediate ceasefire in Gaza and not a week later Whitehorse Mayor Laura Cabott wrote a letter saying she is in full support of the Canadian Government’s call for an immediate ceasefire in Gaza and called for the immediate release of Israeli hostages.
The letter, dated Friday, June 7th, was addressed to Yukon MP Brendan Hanley with Yukon Premier Ranj Pillai cc’d.
On June 3rd, around two dozen delegates spoke in support of a motion Councillor Michelle Friesen for the city to write a letter calling for a ceasefire in Gaza, which was dismissed on a point of order by Councillor Kirk Cameron for being outside the scope of municipal politics the week prior.
The June 7th letter states, “Many Whitehorse residents feel passionately about the need to end this conflict and have expressed their desire for Whitehorse to join those calling for an end to this fighting.”
Mayor Cabott adds that not only Whitehorse residents but also City Councillors and municipal employees are concerned about the violence and loss of life in the conflict.
The letter ends by pledging full support for the Canadian Government to work with partners to advocate for peace.
