WHITEHORSE, YT – Whitehorse City Councilor Ted Laking has announced he will not be seeking another term on City council in the upcoming municipal election this fall, and he has confirmed he will not be running for the position of Mayor either.
Citing a family decision to focus on other opportunities, Councilor Laking called it an privilege to be able to represent taxpayers of Whitehorse, and says the time has come to seek out new challenges and opportunities all the while continuing to help the Whitehorse Community grow.
‘I’m not taking anything off the table, except of course running municipally. There’s a number of opportunities out there and I’m going to stay focused no matter what I do, on ensuring that our community is stronger, that our community remains united, and that other orders of government continue to take the Yukon and Whitehorse seriously and encourage them to include us in their decision making.’ – Whitehorse City Councilor Ted Laking
Councilor Laking highlighted a number of victories during his time on council including his opposition to the development of a new city hall, which at the time had been projected to run millions of dollars overbudget, as well as advocating for better slow clearing around the City based concerns raised by residents following unprecedented snowfalls levels in the winter of 2022. Laking also highlighted the extensive work done to support Whitehorse’s booming population, having utilized his council seat to pressure multiple levels of government to work together in boosting the local housing supply.
Ted Laking was first elected to council in 2021, and he has set a new record in the council chambers for the most motions brought forward by an individual councilor that went on to successfully pass.
