On Jeff’s Midday Grind show, he reviews bad movies each week. It’s an excellent segment, in part, because I get to watch Jeff react to allegedly awful films and also because I get to hear him speak about the soundtrack to the movies he watches.
This week Jeff watched the 1984 classic, Repo Man. If you don’t know, Repo Man stars Emilio Estevez as a punk rocker turned repo man, who’s going after a Chevy Malibu which may or may not have aliens in it. It’s a wild ride. But it’s also a wild punk rock ride.
For starters, you’ve got Iggy Pop doing the theme song. Let’s get into the rest of the soundtrack: Circle Jerks, Black Flag, Suicidal Tenancies, The Plugz, and Fear. Basically it’s a who’s who of 1980s punk. If you were looking for an album to get somebody into punk, this would be it.
How about these soundtracks for good “intros” to rock genres:
– Rock of Ages: Great for 1980s arena classics
– Almost Famous: An Amazing Collection of 1970s rock
– American Graffiti: An excellent primer of the golden age classics of rock n roll
Those are just off the top of my head. Never say movies can’t give you some good rock.
