WHITEHORSE, YT – At the Canada Games Centre on Thursday, January 18th, Yukon’s Member of Parliament, Dr. Brendan Hanley, standing in for Federal Infrastructure Minster Sean Fraser, announced that the Federal Government will be pitching in more than $4.5 million for some much needed upgrades to the CGC Aquatic Center’s HVAC system. The City of Whitehorse will also be contributing just under $2.5 million, for a grand total of nearly $7 million.
The federal funds will come from the ‘COVID-19 Resilience Infrastructure Stream’ of the ‘Investing in Canada Infrastructure Program’ making this the 4th project funded by the initiative in the Territory.
So while the urgency of the COVID 19 crisis has definitely diminished, the health and well being of Canada and Canadians continues to be top of mind for federal government, and as we continue this important work we’re furthering our investments in infrastructure to build healthy, vibrant, and strong communities. Our goal is to strengthen our community and ensure that our infrastructure including here in this recreational facility is there to serve citizens now and well into the future. – Yukon MP, Dr. Brendan Hanley
The upgrades to the HVAC system will address air quality and the effects of high humidity in the CGC Aquatic Center.
The funding that we’re receiving today will go towards maybe not something necessarily flashy, but it is something really, really important. People will understand the pool generates a lot of humidity. Any property owner will know that you need to stay on top of moisture even in a, you know, a dry, cold climate like ours. And so that’s why this investment is really, really important. – Laura Cabott, Mayor of Whitehorse
Also announced during the press conference at the Canada Games Centre, $97,500 from the Federal Government, and $32,500 from the Yukon Government, that will go towards the purchase of two new electric vehicles that will shuttle bus drivers too and from active bus routes across the City of Whitehorse. This funding will come from the ‘Public Transit Infrastructure Stream’ of the Federal ‘Investing in Canada Infrastructure Program’. It’s the 6th recent investment of its kind in the Yukon.
Whitehorse Mayor Laura Cabott says the move is in line with the cities strategic priorities, and will help make the transit system more robust.
