Whitehorse, YT – The Federal Minister of Transport Pablo Rodriguez announced today that funding has been made available for critical improvements at the Erik Nielsen Whitehorse International Airport, including the reconstruction of the main runway
The investment totals $244 Million and is a joint venture between the Yukon and Federal Governments. With $62 million to be provided by the Yukon Government, and the remaining $186 Million by the federal government.
The majority of the project’s activity is expected to take place throughout the summer of 2024 and 25. Minister Rodriguez says that this project will serve as a key avenue for economic growth in the territory in various sectors including mining and tourism.
“You would have more international flights from Europe, so it’s extremely beneficial. A quarter of a billion dollars. It’s good for jobs, short-term midterm, and long-term also,” said Minister Rodriguez. “I’m very optimistic for tourism in the region.”
Of the funding announced, $160.6 million has been set aside for the main runway replacement contract, which has been awarded to Flat Iron Construction Company. The remaining $83.4 million will go towards other critical improvements at the airport which are still in the planning phase.
“It’s good news for the region and good news for the whole country,” said Minister Rodriguez. “So all of this is key to our economic growth, to make life easier and more affordable for Canadians in the region.”
