Whitehorse, YT – Environment Canada has issued a slate of extreme cold warnings for several communities across the Yukon.
Bitter cold nearing -35 C is expected to roll in tonight and will last through until warming up on Friday morning. Coupled with the cold, 20 km/hr winds are expected to roll in pushing the temperature further towards -45 C to -50 C.
The communities with extreme weather warnings currently in effect are Cassiar Mountains, Dawson, Dempster, Faro-Ross River, Mayo, Old Crow, Pelly-Carmacks, and Watson Lake.
Environment Canada is saying frostbite can develop on uncovered skin within minutes and is urging the public to layer up and dress appropriately. They also say it’s important to keep an emergency kit in your car including blankets and jumper cables.
