Whitehorse, YT – After a rigorous electoral process unfolded at a legislative assembly meeting in Yellowknife, Hay River MLA R.J. Simpson emerged as the territory’s new premier.
Initially, the vote featured three candidates but MLA Caroline Wawzonek was excluded after the first round of voting. In the subsequent round the legislature was left to choose between R.J. Simpson and Range Lake MLA Kieron Testart. Over the course of a two hour session of questioning the candidates gave their stance on several key issues facing the territory such as housing, healthcare and federal funding to the territory’s nine designated authorities.
Each candidate addressed these specific issues with Testart emphasizing the need to empower Indigenous governments in tackling housing challenges. Simpson also highlighted the significance of collaboration with Indigenous peoples and also underscored early learning and childcare saying there is, “no better investment.”
After the round of questioning finished and an initial tie in the first round of voting a second ballot resulted in the selection of R.J. Simpson.
In addition to electing a new premier the MLA’s have also selected Nahendeh MLA Shane Thompson as the new Speaker of the House and will also be deciding on six cabinet posts before wrapping up.
