Do you ever see or hear something and think “really?!” Today’s subject falls into the category: Alice Cooper on the Muppets.
Now, I know what you’re thinking… “why would the guy who’s whole act was to shock people go on a kid’s show?” The obvious answer: The Muppets rock. The less obvious answer? Alice Cooper wanted to be on the Muppet Show. From the king of shock rock himself:
“They want you to do The Muppets.’ I went, ‘Wait a minute. We just spent all this time making sure I’m the scourge of rock ‘n’ roll. This is just gonna water it down. I don’t know — can we do that?’ Then I said, ‘Who was on the show recently?’ And they said, ‘Vincent Price. Christopher Lee.’ I went ‘I’m in!”
So there you have it. Alice Cooper chose to do the show because classic horror movie people had been on it… and his stage show was a riff off of those movies.
But how did Alice Cooper make himself PG for the Muppet Show? Turns out he didn’t need to change much. One the show, Alice Cooper acted like an agent of the Devil. Offering the Muppets “wordwide fame and riches” if they traded in their souls. The Muppets didn’t take him up on the offer. But they did offer up a consolation prize: the funky version of “Welcome to my Nightmare” you see below.
