RCMP arrested two youths and completed what they are calling an unlawfully large investigation
WHITEHORSE – Two youths who escaped custody at the Whitehorse Youth Detention Facility were placed under arrest by RCMP.
On August 22, 2023, RCMP received a call from the Whitehorse Young Offender Facility requesting assistance with an armed youth offender in the building.
It was discovered that two juvenile criminals had fled from detention when the RCMP arrived. The Emergency Response Team and Police Dog Services were contacted by the RCMP right away, and the YOF and officers controlled the facility. The RCMP was able to find the juvenile offenders and immediately take them back into detention as a result of the rapid response.
One young offender has been charged with the following as a result of this event:
- Prison Breach, Criminal Code, S. 144; and
- Unlawfully at large, Criminal Code, S. 145(1).
The second offender has been charged with the following as a result of this event:
- Prison Breach, Criminal Code, S. 144;
- Unlawfully at Large, Criminal Code, S. 154(1);
- Assault with a Weapon, Criminal Code, S. 267;
- Possess Weapon for a Dangerous Purpose, Criminal Code, S. 88(2); and
- Mischief in Relation to Property, Criminal Code, S. 430(4).
