Fire crews and emergency personnel continue to fight the Talbot Creek Fire near the Village of Mayo
MAYO – Yukoners evacuating from Mayo are being urged to contact Emergency Social Services to find the support offered to them while people open up the door to help those with nowhere to go.
The Minister of Community Services, Richard Mostyn, and Minister of Health and Social Services Tracy-Anne McPhee were joined by Wildland Fire Management Information Officer Haley Ritchie for an update on the Yukon’s wildfire response.
Minister of Health and Social Services, Tracy-Anne McPhee says the Canada Games Centre is open for lodging, local hotel rooms have been booked and Yukoners are opening up the doors for evacuees. She added that over 150 people have registered to ESS for support so far and encouraged anyone affected to reach out.
Site protection was developed at the Na-Cho Nyak Dun Village and a mechanical guard was put up west of the C6 Subdivision, while work continued in placing a mechanical guard near the airport.
Elsewhere in the territory, 2 new out-of-control fires are visible in Teslin — one 37 kilometres northwest of Johnsons Crossing and another 30 kilometres northeast of Teslin and 13 kilometres from Nisutlin Bay.
Information Officer Ritchie had details on the Talbot Creek fire.
“As of right now the Talbot Creek Fire, (MA-033) remains out of control. Last night, the fire moved mostly northwest and it’s now approximately 4 kilometers south of the Village of Mayo so it remains south of the river. And so yesterday the fire moved mostly Northwest as predicted. Around 7 pm. The fire moved
more west than north. So that’s good news. In some ways, the winds were a little bit in our favour.”
Minister of Community Services Mostyn had more on the road closures affected by the wildfires.
“Please listen carefully to the updates and instructions provided by wildland fire services Yukon Protective Services and local community leaders. It’s essential to follow evacuation orders, safety guidelines, and other directives for your safety and the safety of others check Yukon 511 as the Silver Trail is currently close to northbound traffic and both the North Klondike Highway and the Dempster Highway have been closed intermittently throughout the weekend.”
