Association of Yukon Communities has asked the government to extend municipal terms.
Community Services Minister Richard Mostyn says he supports the idea of extending municipal terms to four years.
Currently, municipal councillors serve a three-year term.
Mostyn told the legislature yesterday he’s now looking into the request from the Association of Yukon Communities.
“Yeah, well, we’ve just gone out to consultation with Yukoners. Since 2017, we’ve held a record 99 engagements, and no other Yukon government can claim to have held as many. I’m really, we’re committed to working with Yukoners and the Association of Yukon communities to support municipalities.
“And I’m glad we’re working with the association and with Yukoners to examine the possible extension of the term of office for municipal and local advisory councils. It’s a little bit more complicated environment these days working in the territory, and they just want a little bit more time to be able to deliver the very important services they deliver to Yukoners and I’m happy to help them with that.”
